A lesson Hyrox taught me about life... | Weekly Wisdom

Why so serious?

I competed in the Hyrox competition over the weekend in Brisbane. I did the Pro Mens Double division with my good friend Tom (PrimeTrain) and we got 59:26, which we’re really happy with.

For everyone that doesn’t know what Hyrox is, it’s basically a fitness competition where you run around in circles a bunch of times, push some metal and throw a ball at a target. The score board is the time.

Now the reality is, that explanation of Hyrox from an outsiders perspective would sum it up quite perfectly if they were to watch this monstrosity.

It got me thinking…

I spent 3 months of consistently training 1-2 times every single day, spending hours pushing the limits of my body, constantly feeling sore, just to improve my ability to run around in circles a bunch of times, push some metal and throw a ball at a target.

It made me realise that things aren’t that deep dude. We’re on a spinning rock in the middle of space called Earth and we fill our days with random things to strive towards so we don’t get bored. Hyrox being one of them.

Yet we seem to get so caught up in things, take things so seriously, treat it like the world is going to be over if we don’t get the outcomes that we wanted.

It does show that we care and don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to stop having these big goals and doing everything I can to achieve them. I just think that life is way more simple than we make it out to be.

We over complicate things so much…

Still compete, still strive for your goals, still beat yourself up for not giving things 100%. Just don’t lose sight of the main things that matter in life. Peace and joy being two of those main things. When we take things too seriously we can strip away the joy from doing the thing and never be satisfied with our progress so we can lack peace as well.

Now imagine a world where you’re an extremely serious person that is living on a spinning rock in space, that is training for a fitness competition where you pay to run around in circles, push some metal and throw a ball at a target, you don’t get the time that you wanted so you beat yourself up, have no peace or joy because your not satisfied with you performance so you proceed to train even harder multiple times each day so you can ultimately be able to run around in circles faster, push some metal a bit smoother and then throw a ball at a target more efficiently so then you can stand on a podium with a flag made from China that symbolises your ability to run around in circles quicker than other people.

We’re. On. A. Spinning. Fucking. Rock…

Laugh a little more

Smile a little more

Smell the roses from time to time

Because one day your hobbies will change, your career will change, your friendships will change, where you live will change, things will go to plan and things will certainly not go to plan.

But we get to choose how we cruise through life. Do we laugh or cry? Do we smile or stress? I sure as hell don’t want to look back at my life and feel like I didn’t have enough play time.

I don’t wanna feel like I grew up too quickly. I wanna feel youthful yet wise. Always.

Thank you Hyrox for teaching me this. And thank you Hyrox for capturing the most horrifying and serious version of my face the world could ever see.
